PERSONAL CARE

CreamThe use of lipids in contemporary cosmetic skin-care products is ubiquitous but it may be surprising to those outside the industry that the products contain so many of these lipid ingredients, rather than just one or two.

In fact, lipids have a wide variety of uses in the design of cosmetic skin-care preparations, whether it be to provide emolliency on the skin, to perform some physiological function thereby improving skin appearance, or even to stabilize the emulsion itself by acting as a key component in the emulsification system.

Of the many reasons why lipids should be added to a cosmetic skin-care preparation, perhaps the most obvious is to confer some sort of emollient (softening and smoothing) benefit to the skin. The skin feel after use of any skin-care preparation plays a vital role in the customer’s psychometric assessment of the product which, in turn, is directly linked to customer satisfaction and the potential of re-purchase.

The lipids used in skin-care products provide emolliency and protection, while often compensating for the loss of the natural oils normally found in the stratum corneum (the outer keratizing layer), particularly in older consumers.

Vegetable derived lipids are very attractive from a socio-political viewpoint, being biodegradable, environmentally friendly and obtainable from renewable sources.
